"PICS" Web Site Self Rating Systems

Internet Content Rating Association
The Internet Content Rating Association is an international, independent, non-profit organization with offices in the US and Europe that empowers the public, especially parents, to make informed decisions about electronic media by means of the open and objective labeling of content. ICRA's aim is to protect children from potentially harmful material while protecting the free speech rights of content providers. ICRA owns and operates the ICRA labeling system, and its RSACi forerunner. (Recreational Software Advisory Council) We have a FREE label generator for creating html code right on our home page!

SafeSurf
The SafeSurf Rating Standard is a voluntary rating system designed to protect children, as well as the first amendment rights of their parents. It was developed with input from thousands of parents and Net citizens, worldwide. Its structure is different from other rating systems in several ways. First, it is more detailed. Second, its goal is to objectively describe both content and how that content is presented. Third, it is the first system designed to allow those who self-rate and those who evaluate to have enough flexibility to reach an accord on a rating without compromising SafeSurf's purpose of protecting the innocence of children. Rate your site with our FREE html generator right on our home page!

Safe For Kids
Safe For Kids is just about the simplest possible rating system. Web sites are self-rated by the author of the individual pages. Anyone can use Safe For Kids filter system by adding it to their browser by downloading and installing the "weburbia.rat" file on the web site. If you are a web page author and you wish to rate and label your site, or you are a software developer wishing to use the Safe For Kids scheme, just stop by the web site for FREE html coding instructions on the three possible ratings.

Vancouver Webpages Rating Service (VWP1.0)
This is an experimental PICS-based ratings service. It is a self-service ratings scheme, meaning that content providers can rate their own pages. Vancouver Webpages has no mandate to ensure that pages are rated correctly, but will listen to any complaints. Our PICS headers include a contact email address for the person responsible for rating a page or web site. Directions on how to use the view source to examine the data on headers are explained on our web site. Our filter system can be used by anyone by adding it to his or her browser by downloading and installing the "VWP1.0.rat" file on the web site.

We have simplified using and installing our PICS rating system for content developers by providing the FREE header generator that will automatically create the proper html header code for your web page. This generator also describes the various categories in the scheme for proper classification of your web site.

Special Note: We are very proud of the fact that we have properly rated and coded within the Meta tags, every page of RenegadeSolutions.net web site of all of the above rating services. We take a very aggressive approach to label this web site correctly not only to protect children, but also to send a clear signal to governments that we, as part of the World Wide Web, are willing and able to self-regulate ourselves. We would rather NOT see the heavy hand of government legislation decide what "is" or "is not" acceptable to us.

We would like to ENCOURAGE EVERYONE who has a web site to use the proper rating system for their web site and please click on the above links to learn more about each respective rating system. You can also find additional information on Internet industry standards known as PICS, which stands for the Platform for Internet Content Selection. Full technical details of PICS can be found at the W3C site.

Properly rating and marking your web site goes hand in hand with a good Privacy Policy. We are very proud of ours along with our strong children and minors policy. We welcome the chance to help anyone with their own Privacy Plan with our Do it yourself manual in order to create their own "Privacy Policy". For those individuals that like to save money on their attorney costs, we also have available a Do it yourself manual in order to create their own "Disclaimer and Terms of use Agreement". Click on these "Do it yourself manual" links above and see if they will help you with your legal agreements!

Browsers

Microsoft
Front Page has been used less and less lately because Front Page software uses tags, protocols and languages readable in some cases only by Microsoft's Internet Explorer and it is not widely used as a product from start to finish. We have found that Front Page does not properly support the use of Cascading Style Sheets and has problems with being compliant with XML, XHTML, and HTML 4.01. We use the FREE Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser to check this site for proper browser compatibility.

Netscape
We use the FREE Netscape's Browser to check this site for proper browser compatibility. You can download the Netscape's browser by clicking on the button logo to the left.

Special Note: Even though we have checked this web site with Internet Explorer and Netscape and try to correct all possible problems with the different browser versions, we realize that we may still miss some possible errors. Reality is that all of the above companies and others have numerous versions of browsers that are constantly changing all for the better. We realize that some people for whatever reason may not upgrade to the most current browser. Because of newer and better browsers, you will find that our web site is usually always optimized for compatibility with at least the past two versions of each of the above browsers. If this web site doesn't display properly I would suggest upgrading to a newer browser version.

Shopping Cart

Miva Merchant
We use Miva Merchant to build and manage complete storefronts with its built-in shopping cart and credit card processing. It has a dynamic browser based storefront development and management system that allows merchants to create multiple online stores from anywhere in the world where there is Internet access. The browser based administration interface provides access to an array of more sophisticated tools to maintain catalogs. Miva also has additional plug-ins for customizations of catalogs and inventory, manage accounts, create comprehensive promotional campaigns, handle order fulfillment responsibilities, and generate detailed sales and website traffic reports.

The Internet is NOT a Library…Yet!

The Internet provides access to an amazing quantity of information. Internet wide search services index hundreds of millions of Web pages. However, people cannot discover what they need unless the information is somehow organized. One approach is to make a huge pile of all the pages and create a giant index. Many services also classify the pages in various and innovative ways. Yet, few of these services today actually work with each other. Most Internet services have yet to agree on standards comparable to what libraries achieved many years ago!

Imagine the Internet as a series of information services, special libraries, museums, and archives with many catalog and indexes all working together to help us discover information. Anyone could create and operate such catalogs, as simply as making a Web page. The catalogs could be designed for a choice of languages and skill levels, and could focus on specific topics or places. A search could span not only an index of millions of Web pages but catalogs and indexes covering most of the world's libraries, atlases, directories, and databases. And, anyone who has used a library would already know how it all works.

MetaData and MetaTags used on this Web Site

We are the FIRST and ONLY Web Site, which we know of, to effectively use and categorize the information contained in this web site with so many meta tags.

AGLS Metadata
As the Internet continues to grow in leaps and bounds, it is important to be able to have your web site found. AGLS Metadata is another method in which to publish your information. AGLS stands for Australian Government Locator Service and any resource the government produces or provides access to can be described using AGLS Metadata. If an agency produces or provides resources for public consumption, AGLS Metadata will help industry and citizens as well as other agencies to obtain these resources. A resource can be anything from a web page to a statue in front of Parliament House. Usually resources will either be informational documents or public services. The AGLS Metadata is designed as a simple system that government staff can easily use and adapt to their agency's needs. While some agencies may choose a more sophisticated thesaurus or fixed vocabulary-based system, a commonsense, author-based approach is still effective and yields a high return to agencies. A good rule to follow is "If it's worth publishing online, it's worth AGLS Metadata".

Dublin Core Metadata Initiative
Metadata is structured data that is used to describe resources so people searching for electronic information can find the information they are seeking more efficiently. The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) is an open forum engaged in the development of interoperable online metadata standards that support a broad range of purposes and business models. DCMI's activities include consensus-driven working groups, global workshops, conferences, standards liaison, and educational efforts to promote widespread acceptance of metadata standards and practices. DCMI is an organization dedicated to promoting the widespread adoption of interoperable metadata standards and developing specialized metadata vocabularies for describing resources that enable more intelligent information discovery systems.

A-Core Metadata
Metadata about metadata, referred to as, the A-Core is useful to designate information about the provenance, management or administration of other sets of descriptive metadata. The objective of A-Core is to provide simple verification of the integrity, ownership, and authorship of metadata retrieved from networked resources. The A-Core elements are utilized to associate the instruments (who, what) with the events (when) of the process of metadata management.

GEO Tags
The content of the Geo tags gives the geographic position of the resource described by the HTML document in terms of Latitude, Longitude, and optionally Elevation in a simple, machine-readable manner. This information may be used for automated resource discovery by means of an HTML indexing agent or search engine. Many resources described by HTML documents on the World-Wide-Web are associated with a particular place on the Earth's surface. While resource discovery on the Web has thus far focussed on document title and open-text keyword searching, in these cases it may be beneficial to facilitate geographic searching. Examples of this kind of resource include pages describing restaurants, shipwrecks, retail stores etc. Consumers may use this information in order to select the closest facility, and in order to navigate towards a resource by road, on foot or by other means.

A very popular Internet mapping service, Mapblast uses a "GeoSearch" engine on their web site to find web sites within a given area. A very effective and soon becoming, another method of being found on the Internet.

GILS Metadata
This vision of global information discovery enabled by common standards is known as the Global Information Locator Service (GILS). GILS adopts a mature international standard for searching labeled information. This standard developed primarily in the library and information services communities. Today, it is in worldwide use on the Internet and other networks, making GILS inter operable with the largest and most valuable information resources available anywhere. We can think of information as packaged in containers. People label information containers in various ways to make them easier to locate. On your word processor, you assign a title and keywords to documents that contain information. Through its card catalog, a library labels books that contain information. Any of these information locators can be very useful, and we can even generate labels for most of the information content available electronically. This is where GILS Meta tags play such an important role.

WAGILS Metadata
The Washington (WA) State Global Information Locator Service (GILS), WAGILS team has devised a metadata attribute set of a list of attributes a government document would contain that would be of value to others trying to find it. These attributes are stored as names in Meta tags, and the owner of the document fills in the values. As the collection of documents on the Internet and within Intranets grows, metadata is emerging as a powerful tool to find useful information. The Meta tags that are placed in government documents will allow them to be found more easily on other search engines as well. Agencies and departments are also able to create and use Meta tags of their own to help them find documents internally.

Owners of web information can also use these same attributes to place Meta tags within their documents. Then the WAGILS search engine "spiders" a list of government web servers to collect metadata about the documents stored there. This metadata is indexed and added to the WAGILS catalog. When users visit the WAGILS search site they search and browse the indexed catalog. When a list of search results is generated, users may click on an item in the list to see the document itself. WAGILS has the support and participation of most state agencies and a growing number of city and county governments. By following WAGILS guidelines for site accessibility, all net citizens have an opportunity to locate your site.

"Why use so Many Different Types of Meta Tags"

The biggest problem facing users of web search engines today is the quality of the results they get back. While the results are often amusing and expand users' horizons, they are often frustrating and consume precious time. How often have you searched for something only to get advertisements for free sex or sex sites come up with those terrible pop up windows that always crash your browser. Most webmasters, web designers, web marketers, and web site owners don't understand that many search engines, but not all, rank pages containing other Meta tags higher in the results listing. Some search engines that don't use Meta tags in ranking still use the information in creating their topical hierarchies like Google as an example, which I feel is one of the better search engines right now.

As these search engines are modified and get more intelligent like Google, if you DO NOT catalog your web site correctly or not at all, you will be left behind in "The Land of the Lost." Just as a simple example (as of this writing) most people are not aware that Google now indexes the following file types:

  • Adobe PostScript (ps)
  • Lotus 1-2-3 (wk1, wk2, wk3, wk4, wk5, wki, wks, wku)
  • Lotus WordPro (lwp)
  • MacWrite (mw)
  • Microsoft Excel (xls)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (ppt)
  • Microsoft Word (doc)
  • Microsoft Works (wks, wps, wdb)
  • Microsoft Write (wri)
  • Rich Text Format (rtf)
  • Text (ans, txt)
  • Images (jpg, gif) and more coming

People are still only willing to look at the first few tens of results. Because of this, as the collection size grows, we need tools that have a very high precision, which is where the various other Meta tags come into play. We want our notion of "relevant" to only include the very best documents since there may be tens of thousands of slightly relevant documents. This very high precision is important for high quality search results. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of optimism that the use of more Meta tags and hypertextual information can help improve search and other applications. This way of thinking will soon be past history.

Ask yourself these questions:
1.  "If you knew that there were TEN different ways for web surfers to find you, how many would you use on your web site"
2.  "Do you have products or services that could be sold on a global level" see AGR below
3.  "Are you listed in other countries libraries or search engines"
4.  "Do you want to be found in a search engine containing only 5 Thousand businesses, or a search engine containing 5 Billion businesses…Or BOTH"
5.  "Will putting forth a little more time and effort help you thrive longer into the future OR are you only looking at today"
6.  "Does it cost more and is it worth it to do it right the first time OR does it cost more to do it twice"

National Office for the Information Economy
The National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE) was established as an Executive Agency on October 18, 2000, pursuant to the Public Service Act 1999. NOIE is the organization responsible for ensuring that Australia takes advantage of the opportunities offered by the information economy and to better understand and build upon the surrounding developments in e-commerce and e-government, nationally and internationally. NOIE is conducting a range of activities to accelerate the uptake of e-commerce in Australia in a manner that improves productivity and efficiency. Management of the Information Technology Online Program that supports the development of collaborative e-commerce, particularly among small to medium size enterprises and to develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills in Australia and support ICT investment promotion activities.

These activities and more will ensure that the lives, work and well being of Australians are enriched, jobs are created, and the national wealth is enhanced, through the participation of all Australians in the information economy.

More brain food:
1.  "Do you want to do business with the Australians"
2.  "Do you want to do business with the Government"
3.  "Do you want to be one of the first few business on their search engines"
4.  "Would you like to be part of the Solutions"

Our attitude and feelings about Meta tags is very simple. "If a resource is worth making available, then it is worth describing it with metadata to maximize the ability of clients to locate it online." The Meta tags on this web site actually exceed the size of the actual web page content!

With so many products, services, and resources available within an organization, across the government or most importantly, across the world, metadata allows us to describe these resources in simple and small packages of information. A good article to read is The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine which explains more of how search engines work and how they rank web sites by using different data. You can view an example of the above document that was cataloged by Stanford Digital Library using Dublin Core Meta tags so you will see one method on how it is used in the practical world.

We here at RenegadeSolutions.net have been trying to keep abreast of extremely fast developing technology with respect to Metadata as you can see from above. Surprisingly, there are more metadata tags that we have elected not to use at this time which include ANZLIC, EDNA, GEM, IMS, and probably many more still in the development stages that I haven't heard about. We feel it is very important to be found on the Internet and it is our intention to provide as much quality information in our Meta tags as what is contained in the document itself in order for searchers to obtain high quality search results and not spam. Unfortunately most of the web sites on the Internet have at best 10 to 20 lines of metadata and some have none at all! Our Meta tags per document are usually over 260 lines and an average length of over 22,000 characters or more prior to putting in the "body" information.

We use mainly two different pieces of software for writing our Metadata tags and one I customized in order to conform to our guidelines here at Renegade Solutions. Sometime in the near future I will make available the software that I use for creating all the above Meta tags along with an ebook detailing exactly how to write all these various tags. I suggest signing up for our web site updates so that you may utilize this software and ebook for your benefit when it becomes available.

Personally I would love to see one standardized group of Meta tags that encompasses all the attributes that a person could just fill in the appropriate blank! Since that is not reality, I strongly suggest everyone that is serious about marketing their products and or services on the Internet and most importantly, to be found on the Internet, to become familiar with the above Meta tags and to use them on their own web site. Your choice, your decision.
